Here is something I have been wondering for a while now...

Why are internet nobodies so bad at film? Snob and Red Letter Media come to mind. Sure they have no money, but good movies have been made with no money. And they are all film school graduates. What did they learn it school because it wasn't how to make a film. Credit to Rolf, his movie was not filmed inside his house with his not actor friends and looked like a movie.

Short answer? They don't care enough and assume they can get away with it.

The big success stories of self-funded film makers come from people who were willing to put themselves on the line and worked hard to get their project done. Kevin Smith ran up a bunch of credit cards to get Clerks made and Robert Rodriguez went through drug trials to get the money for El Mariachi. Brad has mentioned many times in the past he just threw together his movies with whatever he had in his pocket that week. Every project he made, he only ever used his friends, who worked for free, and then spent the bare minimum needed, while using a camera that was slowly dying.

In the Linkara topic, Ben pointed out that Lightbringer was only made so Lewis could get famous through webcomics. He never put much effort into drawing the comic, or really writing it, he just did what he assumed was good enough. And then he became an e-celeb because TGWTG didn't have a comic book guy. His 'grand stories' feature him and a bunch of slapped together costumes. And then for the big movie, he just crowd-sourced the funding, spent it all on one set, then didn't bother to hire a crew or take the time to light it properly because he assumed doing it like one of his videos would be enough.

That's another big problem, mostly with CA, they don't think they need to look professional because while they aspire to be more, back on Blip they could get away with waving a nerf gun in a basement while reciting lines they wrote in under an our as a copyrighted track played and people would not just accept it, they would praise them for how awesome they were. The ad revenue would pay for whatever they'd spent and they could call it a day. And they still assume that that's okay.

However you feel about them, Rooster Teeth made a box office of $1.6 million dollars for Lazer Team. When you factor in DVD/Blu-Ray sales and digital downloads/rentals they probably made their money back, which is why Google is funding the sequel. It took two years for the first one to come out, because they put time into it. How many of these people spent more than, says, six months between announcement and release?

If I went back to 2008 and joined TGWTG, I could easily be a millionaire by now while the rest of them were begging for every last penny on patreon while still spinning their wheels in place. Well, maybe not a millionaire, but they'd be super jealous of me.

I don't even understand the point of a videogame vlog where you don't even show gameplay footage, what even is that?

Yeah, I'll admit, I still watch his Midnight screenings as background noise, like when I'm doing chores or eating or something, but the thing I've noticed is the man really can't articulate what makes a movie good. He sucks at it, he can nitpick what makes a movie bad, but he can't ever pinpoint what the difference between quality and shitty filmmaking is. It's astounding that someone who's made a handful of "movies" sucks so bad when it comes to actually talking about them on an intellectual level.
