Epic comics already did this idea. And they probably handled it more realistically than Hollyweird will, despite having a SUPERHERO in it.

Basically, slavery was phased out as technological advancements made it outdated. The modern Confederacy was more like 1950's America than the 1850's slave states. Which makes sense. The slave economy had retarded the Confederacy's industrialization, which is one of the big reasons they lost. Slavery would have to either drastically change or end altogether for a modern, industrialized nation to work.

But can Hollywood resist the urge to have evil whitey with a whip? Doubtful. If they try and modernize slavery, they'll probably just make the Confederates Nazis, because they're uncreative hacks.
