Honestly, I think Spoony isn't allowed to make more than a certain amount per month or it will disqualify him for welfare or whatever government program he's on. Pulling down 5 grand a month would take considerable effort on his part, so this way he barely works, acts like a crazy person, etc., and gets them easy guvment bucks.

It costing that much "after insurance" means likely one of three things:
1) Spoony made a really stupid choice in what insurance he chose.
2) For some reason, he's insisting on doing it out of network.
3) He doesn't actually need it done, so they're making him pay for it because it's not necessary.
