Gammera (with two m's) is exactly how they described. They keep cutting away from the original Japanese movie to some boring military guys talking about what is happening to trick idiots into thinking the movie wasn't Japanese.

They did the same with most Japanese kaiju movies at the time. It's a miracle Godzilla remained mainly intact with its localization.

Grave of the Fireflies is an apt comparison.

This version dubbed most of the Japanese dialogue into English, altered and removed key plot points and themes, and added new footage with Burr narrating most of the film and interacting with body-doubles and Japanese-American actors in an attempt to make it seem like Burr was part of the original Japanese production.

That’s describing the American adaptation known as Godzilla: King of the Monsters! They actually did a similar thing with the burger adaptation Godzilla Returns (also dark) aka Godzilla 1985. They’re both direct sequels to their original counterparts which is interesting.
