Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance (1972)
Oyh. Finally got a Lone Wolf and Cub boxset, something I had planned to acquire for almost 15 years. Shogun Assassin is an edited version of the two first movies of the series, though there isn't much of Sword of Vengeance in it. According to Wikipedia, SA used 12 minutes of SoV material. Don't know if there's even that, there are only couple of scenes from SoV in SA, the famous "sword or ball" scene and the scene where Ogami Itto fights Shogun's men and has the duel againts Kurando. The dialogue is largely different also, there isn't the famous "They will pay... with rivers of blood!" from SA, or Daigoro's voice-over narration (which I really didn't miss).
The pacing of the film seemed strange in places, for an 80 minute action/chambara movie this had some surprisingly long, tranquil Stoic scenes and some typical Japanese weirdoness. There's also commendable amount of female nudity, some fugg and some good gory deaths. Tomoko Mayama had especially nice and firm tits and was overall being very fuckable, nice! The final battle was also very satisfying and well-built. Overall, a great opening for the series. I'm looking forward for watching the whole thing. The next movie Baby Cart at the River Styx should be largery the same as Shogun Assassin, but hopefully even better. 8/10
