It's a weird short story anyway. I get and agree that science fiction doesn't have to explain everything but AM is basically a magician of keeping them alive, despite them having a very easy time killing themselves in the end. How that torture kept going for that long is just implausible.

The ultimate depressing apocalypse movie is "Threads". BBC TV movie from 1984. Nuclear war happens, society collapses and life becomes medieval again, but not in a cool way. It's mega-bleak. It can ruin your day. It came out on Blu-ray a few years ago and my first thought was "Who the hell wants THAT movie in their home?"
