Because German or rather germanic languages are fucking old, bruh. What we call German today is fairly new, actually. If we consider germanic languages, considering about half of Europe speak them, English being one of them by the way, I'd say it's been fairly successful.
That's really the beef I have with English. It's the gayest germanic language. Must have something to do with the island shitters having French being their official language for too long.
English is still the most reasonable international language, just because it's so piss easy.
