I would imagine a cane making it a lot easier to fuck you up in the long run than crutches if you're not careful (which she probably isn't), due to the risk of putting too much of your weight on one side of your body.

The cane, especially a collapsible one, is the favourite of the malingering narc or the "pity me, I'm disabled" type. You can buy one online and just whip it out when you need to feel some public attention for being "so strong and brave to be out with your disability".

To my shame I know one of these exaggerating malingerer kinds, and after buying a cane they became very reliant on it out of nowhere, because it won sympathy points. And also reinforced their exceptionalism of "woe is me, I need to be treated like I'm a special snowflake just because I hold this cane". Rather than try to improve their own health through lifestyle changes, they used it as an excuse to do nothing but passively wait for extra attention. Compared to a friend of mine who is legit legally blind and has many issues but absolutely refuses help more than the minimum for them to get by in day to day life.
