Curious to see if this place embraces it, I would say the movie's generally pretty good, albeit pretty slow moving.Rapeculture wrote: ↑Sat Nov 02, 2019 5:12 pmGoing to see The Lighthouse today. Surprised it's even playing anywhere near me. I was under the impression that this would be a limited release or something. A movie that would only play in L.A. and New York. I love black and white movies, but then again, I'm old and crusty.

Re: Movie Thread
I'm totally fine with a slow paced movie myself, I have the patience of a saint. Someone here gave The Lighthouse a glowing review, can't remember who, but DHI has excellent taste, so that encouraged me to see it today. Today's the start of my 9-day vacation. I'm kicking it off with a movie day. After I see The Lighthouse, I'm going to watch Good Time.CuckTurdginson wrote: ↑Sat Nov 02, 2019 5:16 pmCurious to see if this place embraces it, I would say the movie's generally pretty good, albeit pretty slow moving.Rapeculture wrote: ↑Sat Nov 02, 2019 5:12 pmGoing to see The Lighthouse today. Terminator: Dark Fate is bombing here in America. Once again, "get woke, go broke" proves to be true. It looks like this movie series is..........terminated.

Re: Movie Thread
So I watched it after work and I was both surprised and not surprised. (I DIDNT PAY FOR IT. THE STUDIO DID NOT GET MY MONEY.)
What surprised me were the fact that it's a competently directed and edited movie. The first setpiece where Juanita and Movieblob fetish girl are on the run from the ICEinator is actually sort of exciting because of these two factors.
I also liked Linda Hamilton's performance, the movie doesn't really give Sarah much to do but I think she's pretty natural handling this pretty lackluster material. Arnold was kind of fun during the initial scene he was introduced in but it seems like the scriptwriters only had enough material to give him a cameo and that cameo is fun but afterwards he just sort of hangs around and the movie never really comes up with anything for him to do.
The stuff I didn't like, the callbacks were consistently cringey, with Sarah's "I'll be back" that's featured in the trailers probably being the least cringey (this is faint praise).
We kill John Connor in the first five minutes and I don't think any of the leaks sell just how awful the fucking digital de-aging looks in this movie. The CG in general looks half-finished and never really improves, but right off the bat the de-aging is a low point.
In this first scene, Linda, Arnold and Eddie Furlong all look like video game characters that would have shown up in a 360 title ten years ago. Hamilton in particular looks like someone smeared silly putty all over her face. It's so fucking uncanny valley. I watched the Jay Exci video and I was still shocked by how bad it looked. It's not promising that this trend looks like it's going to continue, I'd already be willing to wager that, for example, Scorseses insistence on using de-aging will probably ruin The Irishman for me when I finally watch it, I hope I'm wrong but I suspect I'm not. It's a bad trend.
We also spend little to no time with Juanita Connor and her family, we meet her father and brother in the first five minutes and when the two go off to work the Nu-Terminator shows up and kills her dad, it's so fucking quick and during the action beats it's blocked and edited in a way where what is happening is very clear and easy to follow, nothing is too quick, but the pacing is all fucked. It starts by rushing us all thru the setup and when it's done speeding thru the exposition at lightning speed it slows down to a near glacial pace.
The primary issue here is that every facet of the script feels like the screenwriters wrote a first draft and the filmmakers and producers just decided to roll with that first draft. There are ideas that had potential: Juanita and Sarah bond over a sense that they've shared a unique experience (being hunted by these fucking robots) and that's why they care about each other, and Movieblob fetish lesbo girl is honestly completely wasted. She is a third wheel until they need to use a thing she has to kill the ICEinator at the end of the movie, contributing close to nothing of merit to the plot. You could have made her necessary to the story, if the writers had taken the time to actually revise the script instead of just hurrying it down the production line, but as it stands now she's facilitating the same role that Sarah is and could have been cut wholesale.
I think it is slightly better than Genisys, truth be told. That really isn't saying much, as Genisys is barely coherent nonsense. If it had been made as a Terminator spoof, it would have been almost brilliant.
But Dark Fate, there's something sinister about Dark Fate. It steals a lot from the first two movies (they kill the ICEinator in a factory, the ICEinator impersonating border patrol to begin with is just a callback to the T-1000 impersonating a cop, the Arnold sacrifice from T2 is repeated almost verbatim), and with a hook for a sequel at the end, which is pretty fucking bold all things considering, it really comes off like the studios just half-assed it with the intent of turning a profit off the film in China.
And when you frame it that way, "let's film a vomit draft without revising it, let's fast track the VFX because who gives a fuck, it'll make money in China," the movie is almost evil. Its the most cynical piece of work I've seen in a long while.

And unlike last time, it isn't doing good in China either so no bailout this time.
And the beauty is that muh Linda Hamilton and muh James Cameron are back and it's still doing shit in the box office.

Re: Movie Thread
I somehow left out the setpiece at the border. The ICEinator breaks in, kills a bunch of border patrol (like a dozen and a half) and chases our protagonists revealing it's machine parts to what must be hundreds of people (not to mention the cameras that are literally everywhere) but the movie seems to imply that our protagonists are still fugitives, to which I ask, "how? How do you not have mountains of evidence that Juanita Connor is worth protecting/innocent at this point? All you need to do is look around the base for like, five minutes." Like the government should be wanting to retrieve Juanita and be planning to kill this fucker. The movie creates what seems like a gigantic plothole because 'muh virtue signalling', its literally eating its own tail.
And there's also how the arc of it's main character is that she learns that "she doesn't need to be a mother to be strong" or whatever the fuck which is *so* fucking lame. I guess the writers were trying to 'stick' it to the first two movies...which congrats? I feel like the writers of Dark Fate did not watch the first two Terminator movies, as I would argue Sarah found her strength despite her motherhood and the 2nd movie is noteworthy because John himself is almost a damsel in distress. It's just such a weird, stupid angle for Dark Fate to take and it should have been killed in the drafting phase of the script early into the movies production, but that didn't happen because despite what we're apparently several rewrites, these dipshits filmed a first draft.
After all my ranting, I think Dark Fate might be worse than Genisys, I'm actually surprised by how my hate for this movie is increasing as I'm discussing it more. And I'm astonished that I'm even debating whether or not it's worse than Genisys, this franchise is whatever the opposite of an embrassment of riches is.

I'm going to assume that you saw Dark Fate out of morbid curiosity.

I was never intrested in seeing it. The early material showcasing not one, not two, but 3 female leads put me off. It came off as very overtly feminist. But the thing that really killed it for me was when leaks revealed that John Connor dies within the first 5 minutes of the movie, making Terminator 1 and 2 seem completely useless while also pissing on a classic character. His replacement is a 5' tall female illegal immigrant who can't even hold a gun right. GTFO.
