The time limit thing was bizarre, because it started as longer and then they shortened it to 10 minutes, then changed it to pretty much unlimited.

Disney. They bought it just to shut it down.

Maker bought Blip, and was planning to retool it into maker.tv, but then Disney bought Maker and then shut down everything.

Well Blip used to have a big incentive over YT: The videos could be longer than ten minutes, up to several hours if I remember correctly, and you could also watch them in HD if that was available. Eventually, YouTube did catch up and surpassed them in those areas, so there was no longer a reason for people to leave the site. The problem is, Blip never made any efforts to change in a way that would provide some other incentive to the user. What they did offer was a shitty ad system that would cause the videos to not play after you'd watch the ad.

It also didn't help that YT can more easily afford to not actually make profit. Dominating the internet video market is enough for Google.
