I don't really have a side on the whole "Is the prequel or sequel trilogy the worst" debate.
But I can say that with these new films, at least I wasn't embarrassed to be there.

When I saw Eps 2 & 3 in the theater, the audience was howling in laughter at certain scenes that were supposed to be serious. It was so cringey. (When I saw Episode 1, the audience was in stunned silence. People couldn't comprehend that they had waited 16 years for a bad Star Wars movie.)

The prequels were a half-decent idea incompetently made. JJ Wars is a dumb idea competently made.

About Star Wars. I somewhat liked the prequels, but I realised I was in denial. Then I didn't like them at all, but now that I'm old they've grown on me a bit. At least SOME of the stuff don't suck. Kinda like Hayden Christiansen, he's gotten too much crap. Obi-Wan was good. And I kinda, KINDA, see how Midechloreans could have worked, if not retarded.
The new movies.. eh, they're eeeeeeeeh meh ok. They should have been diverse in the alien kind of way, not the token black guy, genderfluid-y and Mexican way. That shit is even more racist. I don't agree. I think Clone Wars and Revenge are the worst two. They alternate between cringeworthy farce and extreme boringness at the drop of a hat. I wouldn't say the new movies are "good," but they're better than "now THIS is podracing" Little Annie growing at boner for Podme Amygdala. Phantom Menace had Jar Jar and is also worse than the new movies.

People let their hatred for SJWs/feminism build up sperge towards The Box Office Awakens and blind them to how bad the old prequel movies are.

But anyway, Star Wars is definitely one of the most overrated science fiction series ever made. The Hidden Fortress is a fairly mediocre film compared to Kurosawa's other movies, but it's still better than every Star Wars film outside of New Hope and Empire. Aka the two good ones. Those are the only completely, 100% "good" Star Wars films ever made and likely are the only good ones which ever will be made.

Meanwhile, legitimately talented directors like Kurosawa have an entire film career spanning decades, where every movie they've ever made (even the worst of them) stands head-and-shoulders above the prequels and the new SW movies.

I was just obsessed with Dune at one point. Got like 14 books or so. And surprisingly, most of them hold up, too.
