So without much media attention (thanks, World Cup), the EU is currently attempting to pull a 180 on their stance regarding copyright infringement: Now they want content hosts like Youtube to scan user content for content ID and stuff before it is uploaded, since any infringement found later can be used to rape the host, not just the yokel who uploaded it.

(Of course this "upload-filter" could also be used to censor wrongthink, but that's totally not going to happen.)

Man, this sucks big time if it goes through. I better start looking for some VPN so I can actually keep using the internet.

Yeah, I noticed youtube already kind of does this automatically. A severe enough copyright violation will get you autoflagged at about the moment you upload a video. But I think we can all see that the direction of internet sharing is trending towards a lot more restrictions rather than fewer. Demonetizing videos is one thing and I'm fine with that, but blocking videos from even being uploaded could be the future.

This might also effectively end European start-ups from being a thing, since you wouldn't be able to make anything social-media-related without having to invest who knows how many millions into some Orwellian censorship algorithm.

I guess yokels in the music biz will be happy, but they don't seem to realize the sheer marketing power of YT and memes (which would also become haram under this law).
