Boys buy the sabers, ships, and action figures. If they have no idea who to tell what or why it's awesome they'll just make up adventures with other random toys.
Girls will chatter and cheer for things they like but in the end still play with the same four Barbies. They're more interested in the actors than the characters, and just make up their own fantasies by imagining the same faces in other settings.

This is why 80s and 90s cartoons and films were so awesome. They knew to focus it on the toys and just build better stories from the cool shit they could do.
