I knew of a couple who met in IRC in the mid-90s and did the long distance relationship for several years. They visited as often as possible and did cons together until she moved across the country to live with him. They eventually got married in 2002. They now have three kids.

People like that make an attempt to make their relationship work. They make plans for a future together. Lupa and Phelous want to enjoy the status of being a long distance couple ("They've been together for so long! They're so in love!"), but neither of them want to go beyond dating.

On what are you basing that assumption? Just weeks after he first initiated contact with her by commenting on a video of hers he sang her that creepy happy birthday song on stream. He obviously looked up her date of birth or asked her about it.
