Well, it's so obvious that they want to be. American comics and cartoons have been trying to play a very slow catchup with Japan for 20 years or more.

They'll copy certain superficial elements, but they really won't take the necessary risks to make a story impactful or memorable. There have been some exceptions, but this is not one of them. This is just, "Anime has blood & guts, right? Let's do THAT!!!"

It's not COMPLETELY dead, just mostly dead. We did have Devilman Crybaby just this year. The people that made it are teasing that they have something else in the works and everyone is hoping and praying that it's Violence Jack.
