Sam Raimi started it a bit since Spidey is all about how being an hero can be shit, but Nolan added that extra layer of pretentiousness.

The final film was two hours. However, Man of Steel was an overly bloated piece of shit and, though I didn't see it, Batman V Superman was apparently also an overly bloated piece of shit, so I don't doubt the original cut of Justice League was yet a third overly bloated piece of shit.

WB apparently set a hard limit of 2 hrs early on for Justice League in response to the criticisms over BvS.
