You're pretty much right on the money here. My old college roommate is a practising clinical psychiatrist now, and we've discussed this. In his experience over 10-ish years of working, every single "asexual" person is just someone with an much lower than average sex drive -- they still enjoy sex and desire it, just less often than most people. They all fall well within the normal spectrum of human sexual desire, just falling toward the lower libido end.

It only became a reasonably common thing in the last few years; he hadn't encountered anyone claiming to be asexual until perhaps 2013 or 2014, and since then the number has exploded -- all either late Millennials or early Gen Z. Basically prime snowflakes.

He also says there's a noticeable correlation between self-described asexuals and incels. A lot of the "asexuals" he deals with turn out to be incels who have coopted the asexual thing as a cover or way of dealing with being incel. It's basically a form of denial for them.
