I don't think they'd try to touch Columbo simply because the networks think 'that's for old people'. Then again, they tried to reboot Murder She Wrote with a black woman and Murder She Wrote really was for old people.

Columbo could work if they'd get Vincent D'Onofrio for the role. He was pretty much being Columbo in Criminal Intent already and I very much enjoyed him being that annoying Inspector that always has just one more question. He could totally pull that off.
But who would they get as the criminals? Having the best of the best as the bad guy was also part of the success of it. Not to mention that there aren't any clever writers left over and that the production company sure as shit would try to make it exciting with dumb music and editing.
But in theory, I'll say a new Columbo could be possible.

I dunno. As much as I like D'Onofrio I would be opposed to it for two reasons:
1) D'Onofrio's kind of already done it. There'd be this sense of 'why try and do Columbo when you could just do more Criminal Intent' (which they should have done, instead of keeping Law & Order: SJW alive)
2) Columbo's sort of a dotty, mostly un-threatening, harmless old man whereas D'Onofrio as Goren is, arguably, kind of autistic but certainly not harmless. The energy is different
Then there's the other stuff you mentioned. They could probably get big stars to play the killers but then there's the small problem of most of today's big actors being unable to actually fucking act. Knowing Hollywood today, they'd also probably try to get Mrs Columbo in there, probably to upstage Columbo. They'd also probably try to sex it up a bit more, to hide weak storytelling if nothing else.

Oh they would fuck it up for sure. Only point I'm arguing is that what people usually say, that nobody could possibly play Columbo other than Peter Falk. D'Onofrio was already more than halfway there. He's getting older and more mellow and I think he could pull off Columbo and not just be Criminal Intent guy yet again.

Columbo is my favourite TV show by far. I can easily do without any more Columbo being made because it would likely just be shit anyway. I am fine with watching the show over and over. So me saying that I think D'Onofrio could play Columbo satisfyingly well is nothing I say lightly. He's the only guy I can imagine being able to do so.
Everything else however I think is impossible. There is absolutely no way the current production side would allow for a good revival.
