He's talking about something he thinks is the problem, when it's not actually his real problem.

He's assuming Trump is acting self-destructive because he's been called out and spiraled bad decisions leading to anger, like he supposes what happened with Scarlett or Lupa. That's fine that he finally admits it, but that's not what he should be dealing with currently.
Right now, his problem stems from how he doesn't want to face the consequences of reality, and would rather put blinders on and distract to anything else rather than deal with any part of it. If you push anyone away, it isn't because you're trying to lash out to spread the hurt--it's because they remind you of things happening in your life you desperately want to avoid.

Both are how a child with stunted emotional development would act defense mechanisms, but are completely different. You could say this present one is arguably worse, since he can even rationalize all teh way up to the mirror while refusing to consider applying any of it to himself.
