It didn't really feel like it was the middle film of a trilogy though, it felt like it was written in isolation rather than considering episodes 7 and 9.

That's because Rian wrote it before he 7 came out and had to rewrite the movie because of what happened in Farce Awakens. The movie was meant to come out in the summer (North hemisphere summer, here in Australia it clearly did) but got delayed due to his rewrites pretty much right after 7 came out, which explains why the film is a jumbled mess of good and bad ideas.

When talking about Marvel, they've admitted they are kind of writing it as they go, which is why they restrict on certain things you can and can't use. But it works because those are meant to be separate franchises that are part of the same universe. Guardians 1 didn't have to worry about Shield getting disbanded in Captain America 2 because it was in another solar system. But it doesn't work here because these are direct sequels.

If they'd just gotten everyone together in a room and said "Plan out the trilogy" it would have made things a lot simpler and better.

Which is why Kathleen Kennedy is to blame. Everyone is harping on about her being an SJW, but she is also shit at her job as a producer. Her job was to get everyone on the same page so this Star Wars thing worked, but she fucked it up royally by having multiple people work on the same trilogy. It should have been one person writing all three, not Rian writing 8 and 9, JJ writing and directing 7, Rian directing 8 and some other guy directing 9.

Wow here I was assume the plot and character probablys were a result of writers rushing into production to meet the set deadlines but they literally had the guy write the sequel to a film he didn't make before it came out. That's fucked.

I just realised JJ Abrams made TFA awakens setting up all this stuff that Rian Johnson completely threw away (Snoke, Rey's parents, the entire map to Luke Skywalker subplot) and now he's back for episode is he just gonna stick all this back in now?

7 was a complete waste. It needed to do a lot of worldbuilding to explain what the hell happened inbetween Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. It needed to better establish what Leia and Han had been doing all that time and how they've changed. It needed to flesh out the new characters better and make them feel like real people instead of Mary Sues and Tokens. Instead it wasted its time with silliness and rehashing A New Hope.

8 kind of explains that if you pay ultra close attention. Luke says that Han was "Han about it" when referring to training Ben, while Leia pushed for it. With Ben turning into Kylo Ren, Han likely lashed out at her for fucking up while she would have blamed it Snoke being Babadi from DBZ.

I meant they should have explained what the Republic was, what the Resistance was(why would there be a Resistance AND a Republic?) and what Leia's role in building it was. Explained a little bit about Snoke and how he came into contact with the main characters (Han and Leia seem to know him?).

I know in general it didn't, on that point it kind of did. I blame JJ's mystery box shit on that, I feel that Rian was pissed about all that and it came out in his writing since I assume his original script didn't mention any of it.

Just you wait. A ridiculous amount of things will be retconned in part 9. People keep telling me it won't happen, but I know it will. Jizzney know the fan reaction has been very split despite high sales.

A lot of the more annoying aspects of the last sjediw were down to rian being an edgelord about star wars. "Fans like this thing? FUCKING RUIN IT FOR THEM." Seemed like the guy personally took umbrage at anyone who liked those old movies, and wanted to piss in their faces.
