Just play Vesperia. Although you might find Yuri too snarky for Current Year. If you have tolerance for pushover main characters, Tales of Xillia may be a good choice. I love the cast, despite sometimes wanting to fling Jude from a trebuchet.
Better yet, download the fan translation for Tales of Destiny Director's Cut for the PS2. That's a tight 2D combat Tales game.

I actually enjoy playing Silver the Hedgehog. I suppose in retrospect the Spoony Experiment Storyline could also be considered New Weird genre. Control is a worthy dark souls game and making a comeback just like playstation and xbox.
I remember buying katamari for the switch, playing it maybe five minutes and then getting bored.
I think these are games that I remember being better than they were, because of nostalgia. The music is without peer, for sure, but gameplay is just... You roll over a thing and you either succeed and absorb it or you fail and bounce off.
