Re: Movie Thread
Mission Impossible 3 is an improvement on 2, yes - but you’re better off just skipping to Ghost Protocol.
3 has the Kurtzman writing Trek fans have come to despise, but 4-6 are probably the highs of the franchise.
The big thing with 2 is it’s boring.
Boring is ok when it’s directed by fucking Ozu or Hamaguchi, not an action spy franchise.

Autism attracts more autism. Sooner or later, an internet nobody will attract the exact kind of fans - and detractors - he deserves.

Wasn't the director some Asian Micheal Bay-equivalent?
AH STILL GOT IT BISH!
JFC he turned into Da Gunt.
Maybe if someone tries to stage dive, he'll start screaming "Arrest him! Arrest him!".

I have a huge soft spot for J. J. Abrams, so I'll check it out for him. Star Trek Into Darkness is the only thing he's done that I haven't liked.CuckTurdginson wrote: ↑Thu Jul 10, 2025 2:34 amMission Impossible 3 is an improvement on 2, yes - but you’re better off just skipping to Ghost Protocol.

That's the one.CuckTurdginson wrote: ↑Thu Jul 10, 2025 2:58 pmDo you mean John Woo?
When i learned that he was directing and not De Palma, i knew that the movie was going to be much worse than the first.
I never watched his Hong Kong productions though; those are probably much better than the Hollywood slop he made afterwards.

Re: Movie Thread
Hard Boiled is not bad.
Speaking of not bad, The Silence of the Lambs.
I had not seen this movie in over a decade, so it was interesting to go in with effectively fresh eyes; and its better than I remembered. Occasionally you get something like a Die Hard, or a New Hope that does indeed live up to the hype. Jodie Foster...I sort of wonder if Clarice Starling would prompt an online tantrum if the movie came out now, since you're to sympathize with her when she gets sexually harassed; but Jodie Foster is locked in the whole time.
Hopkins is even better, that is straight up one of the greatest performances of all time. The movie establishes that he's been locked up like that for about eight years, so him being a little more unhinged in this I suppose makes sense in context; but I couldn't help but wonder how this version of Hannibal Lecter actually functioned in civilian life, in contrast to Brian Cox and Mads Mikkelsen where I understand it a little better. Hopkins just seems so explicitly satanic in this. He's also entertaining enough where said nitpick wasn't something I pondered for too long.
But now to make fun of trannies. Lots of tumblristas have branded Silence transphobic coming into the 2010's and 20's. There's some thread where shitlibs are tripping over themselves to paint Buffalo Bill as a victim that I can't find; but it was funny and you can probably fill in the blanks on what they were saying anyway. So it's a common belief in current year psychology that one can have gender dysphoria without being recommended to transition, and its clearly established that the doctors told Buffalo Bill to fuck off when he went to try and get the procedure. I suppose its convenient to conflate dysphoria with actually transitioning. Read someone argue that Bill is hiding behind >muh trans as an excuse for his behavior, and that's such a provocative choice that no wonder tumblr and reddit are having a tough time understanding it. Fucking great, though.
The other point is that the theme of the movie is choices, the choices we make and how they impact other people; so it doesn't really matter what Buffalo Bill's deal is, he's got a woman locked in a well and he's killed several people. Bro's gotta get iced. You can see this theme of choices reverberate during the movie, Clarice is at the start of her career; where she will make several choices that will impact the rest of it. Lecter chooses to be a psychopath, and he also chooses to help catch Buffalo Bill; and watching the movie you wonder how genuine Lecter is being. Does he genuinely like Clarice or is he manipulating the situation so he can get out? The answer skews towards the latter with a hint of the former, which makes him a joy to watch.
I don't know, there's a lot of Thomas Harris stories where the killer is a >straight white man. Just watch Manhunter if you want that. That movie rules, too.
Anyway, love the movie. As far as best picture it is my favorite of the nominees that year. Of all the movies in 1991, I still have a fondness for Barton Fink; but Silence isn't too far behind.

Buffalo Bill did nothing wrong. He was just living the troon life.
Come on. Everyone loves the part where he climbs a plateau just to put on some shades.Complicity wrote: ↑Fri Jul 11, 2025 4:43 amWhen i learned that he was directing and not De Palma, i knew that the movie was going to be much worse than the first.

Re: Movie Thread
Buffalo Bill is a great villain. Good MO, interesting endgame, iconic line, and who can forget that amazing dance followed by doing the girlie?
They even says transsexuals aren’t inherently violent in the movie, which is debatable, but Hannibal says Bill isn’t one, so you lose either way.
