OK, yes, it did happen that one time. It was such a fluke that we still speak of it today. And I guess there were some weird cases where they ran out of money and didn't finish like Grizzly II: Revenge or The Day the Clown Cried, although Grizzly II eventually did come out and the Holocaust Clown movie likely will also eventually come out some day.

They always made millions and always needed big writeoffs. Sometimes it's just more financially viable to dump the whole thing than to put more money into distribution.
