In 1999, Patrick Stewart starred in an adaptation of A Christmas Carol.
I remember renting it when I got back to the US and being very disappointed by it. It just seemed very lame compared to the George C. Scott version I grew up with.

I didn’t grow up with it but remember seeing it back on TCM back when I had cable and loving it. It’s definitely my definitive version.

It's a spinoff movie to Discovery.
That potentially only got made because the main actress won an Academy Award in the meantime.*
It's about an elite and secretive organization - except the people shown in the movie are neither elite nor secretive.
And it's yet another NuTrek movie about a revenge plot involving some super weapon, because that's apparently the only type of Trek movies allowed to be made.

*) Alternatively, the award might've convinced them to downsize their doomed idea of an entire spin-off series into at least a movie.

It's mostly Starfleet officiers being overly emotional and dumb, with plots that keep trying to rip off Wrath of Khan, except, you know, gay and lame.

I'm missing exactly nothing. It's Star Trek in name only. It's like an AC/DC cover band playing shitty original songs and sounding nothing like AC/DC but insisting I'd like or miss out on something because they name their albums and songs the same.

Kurtzman Trek has been confined to TV, so I suppose this illustrates the difference between TV and movie critics. The movie people have to watch the whole movie, and I doubt most TV critics finish the season of any given show, unless the show in question is *really* good.
