Re: MonHun
Only other game I got into G-Rank is 3U and I quit after getting rolled ultra hard by a Brachydios. That was early on in my MH career when I hadn't built up the required resilience and only knew GL and and bit of LS.
You'd know if you hit XX G by having access to the tavern. It's a striking location that remains locked for so long and leaves a spot open on the fast travel menu.
I'm currently having a lot of fun with G-Rank. Monsters are quite fast but none were bullshit so far.
Oh and smoke bombs are absolutely brilliant. I started using them after seeing a speed run make use of them.

Re: MonHun
There's a quest that's a Low Rank villager request. It's an advanced one, so the difficulty is actually High Rank. It's a request by the Kotoko village chief to fight a Gold Rathian and Silver Rathalos in the arena.
The quest is infamous for how difficult it is. It unlocks the best hunter art for the S&S and currently I need to clear this request to get the next one.
I've got G-Rank equipment now, so how bad could a LR, dipping into HR quest be?
Fucking impossible! Not even remotely close!
Even if you manage to pull the fence up, either hit as hard as proper G-Rank monsters. Dealing with both is plain stupidity. You catch stray hits so often that half your health is gone and you're on fire or poisoned before you even get a single hit in.
I don't see myself being able to make it until G3 when I've got a serious set of armor and dragon and lightning elemental weapon. With an Arzuros set, even with defence up +3 and buffed I get rolled like I'm sporting LR Jaggi armor. It's stupid.

Some of those multi monster requests are real ball-busters. And yeah, you've noticed that the villager quests don't label themselves as low or high rank. Any quest over a certain numbers of stars is just considered the next rank. The DLC hunts are another area where the rank of the monster is usually higher in difficulty than what is posted. I remember hunting Hyper Arzuros and I was surprised how much stronger they made what I normally consider THE weakest monster in MonHun.

Re: MonHun
Some of that DLC stuff is mental. I've checked out a few of those on Kiranico for drops I need.
Oh, look, a 1 star hunt for a Silver Rathalos! Surely that's eas- 9100-9450 HP. The G-Rank Diablos I had to hunt to break into G-Rank had 7000 HP with a 4.7 damage multiplier. The Silver Rathalos has a 6.7 multiplier, which is more than your average G-Rank Deviljho has.

Re: MonHun
A lot of progress has been made, yet it feels like I'm threading water.
I have crafted so damn many weapons and improved even more. That's mostly motivated by DB being really difficult to make in this game.
See, anything that doesn't at least have blue sharpness just falls off in XX. You bounce off of monsters and with the faster movement of monsters in G you'll get hit and since I don't have a great armor set, every hit hurts bad.
DB also tend towards fairly low sharpness. I currently sit at G2 quests and going through the weapons list there's not much I can make to get over that speedbump.
Having struggled through making super sharp DB made from insect parts, I found that non-elemental DB are damn near trash tier.
To cut a long story short, I eventually ended up with the king of all weapons in MonHun, the OG, the GOAT! The mighty Greatsword.
I had dabbled in it since MonHun 4. But I've never actually committed to it.
Seeing as I could craft very high end ones, I just went for it. Damn, it almost feels like fighting LR monsters with HR weapons!
As always, Valour style is absolute king but for some monsters I prefer Adept style and then also for extremely mobile ones that are hard to hit, like Uragaan, Aerial style is best.
I just finished making a Volvidon set and it has focus. That's a total game-changer!

Re: MonHun
Now here's something that never happened to me in MonHun before.
I wanted an armor set with good water defence because Plesioth is a dickhead.
So I browsed through G-Rank armour parts I could make and what would be good. The Khezu set ended up being the choice.
I had absolutely everything to make it right away and upgrade it twice. I also had a talisman with +5 focus, everything to make five focus decorations and the set had the five required slots.
Aside from different elemental values, it's superior to the Volvidon set I have. Higher defence, more slots and better skills.
I didn't have to hunt pr gather anything at all. I just had all that stuff lying around!
Now, I made the Volvidon set specifically because I needed a decent set with high fire elemental defence. So it's not useless, nor did I have to farm a lot for it.
But I have absolutely never been able to craft, improve and fully kit out a current top tier set without getting something!

Re: MonHun
I bothered to "finish" MHGenU. A Valstrax is the final hunt for the non-G version of the game. You get a credits scroll and everything.
It's a gloomy feeling. As nice as this celebration of MonHun is and as much this is a kinda KoF 98 game it is, at least KoF got new entries. But for MonHun this is it. We will never get another proper Monster Hunter ever again.

Yeah, I remember getting the credit roll for base level Generations and thinking it was a bittersweet feeling. I was happy because the game was great, but it represented the last of the old-school, purely traditional MonHuns. We haven't had a monhun game like that since and we aren't likely ever to receive another. MonHun went mainstream with World and Rise was successful, so all future games will be more along the lines of those two. Which doesn't cater to what I enjoy about MonHun (slow, methodical pace, hunt planning, item and inventory management.)

Re: MonHun
Most importantly, the silliness. The gameplay previews of Wilds gave me terminal depression. That gritty, realistic look is more like hunting Kaiju in a Mad Max apocalypse hellscape. Sounds cool if you describe it but looks dystopian as fuck. I never wanted my MonHun to be grimdark!
Thankfully, there's still quite a bit of GenU left. I'll whack more cool, colourful monsters with the aid of cats to the very end. Then I still have MonHun 1, Freedom Unite, Tri and Portable 3rd to play, plus 3U and 4U to either play for the first time or take to G-Rank.
Get that real world gloomyness the fuck away from my Monster Hunter! I want to see comfy villages and fantastical landscapes that make me wish that I live there, not depressing, post-nuclear deserts with ugly monstrosities to fight for survival!
Whoever thought the series where one carries a sword the size of Dragonslayer and kicks lazy cats needs realism ought to get taken out the back!

Re: MonHun
Nu-MonHun will never have a dragon as cool as Valstrax. Sure, they will put it in the game, like Rise has, but they will never come up with something like that.
He takes off, circles the area, breaks the sound barrier with a boom and come crashing down like an artillery shell! Maximum cool!
