Re: Reddit Letter Media
Didn't Wedge Antilles survive both Death Stars and Hoth (although that wasn't an X-Wing)?

I have a two-part response.RedLine wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2024 5:40 amLindsay's Liver wrote: ↑Wed Jun 26, 2024 8:46 pmSo I relate to their approach of taking an "anthropolical" (Mike's word) look at what's happening with Star Wars. I relate to it far more than I relate to the 150 other YouTubers peddling rage for views.
It seems stupid to be dedicated to "apolitical" analysis when the actors and executives in charge of these shows are open about them being a political statement. This isn't all just right-wing incels over reacting to a woman X-Wing pilot or something, the industry itself plays into this.

In an earlier post, I mention that I relate to Mike and Rich's approach because we're the same age and we grew up without the hyper-politicization of every fucking thing.
Meanwhile, younger people (left wing and right wing) seem to process everything through a political filter. Their brains are wired differently.
Just last week, I talked with a coworker (mid-40s, maybe) about the new "brat pack* documentary. It's about the actors who became famous starring in teen angst movies of the 80s. I haven't seen the documentary yet, but I'm curious. In the middle of our conversation, a younger coworker (early 30s) chimed in with "Oh, I love 'Pretty in Pink' and 'The Breakfast Club'! I mean, they take place in a world where everyone is white, but they're good!"
The "white" thing came out of nowhere and the person who said it was a white woman. I didn't respond, but I found it memorable because it's an example of how someone her age thinks. They notice identity politics bullshit, while I don't care at all. I just want a good movie.
I grew up loving lots of movies with female heroes (Alien, Night of the Comet, 99% of slasher movies in the 80s). I grew up with George Romero's zombie movies, where the most likable and heroic character was always black.
Never gave a fuck back then. Never thought about giving a fuck. I would still prefer to not give a fuck.
This is where Mike and Rich and I come from.

But, yes, I know that today's media shoves their politics down your throat. I don't know what can be done about it other than to just not watch it.
What I DO know though is that "culture war"-based critics are ineffective. When your criticism is primarily political, people who.don't side with your politics immediately stop taking you seriously.
Ben Shapiro, who has a huge audience, railed HARD against "Barbie" and boldly asserted that it was a guaranteed bomb.
He was completely wrong.
This style of criticism doesn't do anything other than preach to the choir. It's become a way to make YouTube money by telling a certain audience what they want to hear.
These "critics" act like they're holding a samurai sword, but they're really holding a butter knife.
Far stronger to me is to leave politics out of your argument and make a solid case for why a movie or series is hack bullshit. RLM's evisceration of the 2016 "Ghostbusters" reboot is so good because it doesn't lean on complaining about feminism and instead talks about how objectively shitty the movie is.
"Ghostbusters" bombed because it was terrible (yes, I saw it) and that was enough.
"Barbie" was a hit because it was clever and funny and appealed to a wide range of people. Anti-woke critics couldn't process that and looked like out-of-touch fools who didn't get it.
Re: Reddit Letter Media
That was pretty much it and I didn't even make it halfway through. The moment they claimed that wokeness is just what people believe today when comparing to George Lucas being anti Vietnam war is when I switched off because that is complete bullshit. If you live in an insanely woke area it may be true but if you get off Twitter for 5 minutes then that is not the norm.Complicity wrote: ↑Wed Jun 26, 2024 4:40 amTranslation: "We can't openly shit on this dumpster fire because we don't side with le evil alt right notsee, so we pretend to be fence sitters".
Pathetic leftist cunts.
Keep in mind that it was Mike and Rich here and not Jay. Rich is a woke faggot who holds back a bit when he is with Mike and Jay but he clearly influenced this review whether Mike knew it or not. Millennials may be overwhelmingly left wing but even they aren't largely blue haired retards, if movies were obsessed with climate change then they would be correct.

Re: Reddit Letter Media
Barbie wasn't clever nor it appealed to a wide range of people. It was loud, pink, and the exact kind of annoying shit women would love in a movie - and then a bunch of them forced their cucks to go watch it with them, inflating the box office numbers. It was not a coincidence that it was the "Barbenheimer box office" - women went basically "I'll watch the 3 hours Nolan biopic movie about atomic bombs as long as you sit through Barbie with me". A lot of men were coerced, because there are no "chick flick" on theaters anymore and Barbie was the perfect opportunity for women to bitch about and demand the men go watch it with them, after 10 years of having to go watch Mahvel capeshit with their cucks. Only idiots like Ben Shapiro would think that it would flop because if was a feminist movie.

Barbie was a hit because it was Barbie.
Autism attracts more autism. Sooner or later, an internet nobody will attract the exact kind of fans - and detractors - he deserves.

But why? If the people creating the media itself says it is supposed to be political then that seems like a fair angle for criticism.Lindsay's Liver wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2024 9:52 amFar stronger to me is to leave politics out of your argument

Re: Reddit Letter Media
Exactly. A pink nostalgia fest for women everywhere - even women raised too poor to even have a Barbie as a kid. The only that movie would flop was if they produced it as some sort of "subversion of femininity" that completely disregarded what girls like about their dolls, by some very angry dyke or obnoxious faggot director. Hasbro (or is it Mattel?) must have made sure that shit didn't float, and to be fair the producers were very happy to abide to a pink feminist power fantasy movie anyway.
The point is, and I think everyone can agree to, is that Ben Shapiro is a fucking idiotic Jew who needs to be shoved back into the oven.

I'm not saying that it can't be a fair angle for criticism, but young people tend to think that it's the ONLY angle for criticism. And when something doesn't do that, you're confused by itRedLine wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2024 1:46 pmBut why? See how people are treating RLM's very unenthusiastic review of "The Acolyte" as a positive one.

Do you think that The Quartering, Midnight's Edge, Geeks & Gamers, etc. have serious power to change Hollywood and influence what gets made?
