I’ll give FF16 one thing - it allegedly introduces something called “Real Time Lore” where you can like pull up a glossary/synopsis in real time during cutscenes - and I don’t hate that idea.
Just wish it wasn’t a DMC clone that mostly jettisons the concept of party members. You want the combat to be less stiff - Tales of Symphonia innovated a system like that 20 years ago and Vesperia perfected it 15 years ago.

I don't think Tales of Symphonia is necessarily better in that regard than previous Tales entries. The camera's fucking atrocious. I can kinda tinker with the camera zoom so I can actually see shit, but it is impossible to turn off the camera's obsession to give me whiplash by focusing on any character doing something fancier than a level 1 spell.

Also they really just copied a feature that is somewhat common with games that have visual-novel-style dialogue "cutscenes".

It's the worst party member system in the series thus far because, outside of the wolf, you don't have direct control over any human companions & they can't die, so it's essentially not even a true party. Ever. Just AI-controlled meat shields who're virtually invincible unless plot happens. It's somehow even worse than FF15, literally made for the mentally impaired tiktok audience. Even Mystic Quest had more effort. Why even have party members anymore when the MC's basically a bloody one man army?
The sheer volume of cope from the game's fans shills is like a mountain of salt mixed with a torrent of whataboutisms right now, a perfect representation of squarefags over the past decade.

You got to admit, though - while I like its plot less than Symphonias - the combat in Vesperia is damn near flawless.

No one FF I think gets the party completely right - 6 has too many characters (and FF6 is one of my favorite games ever) - I suppose it’s better if you assess it on the grounds of whose required, but I’m a completionist to the point of it being a problem. 7 has a lot going for it - but the Material system does make everyone feel samey (and no one uses Cait Sith) - 8 has a similar samey problem due to the draw system - never finished 9 - but 10 was a step in the right direction. Fucked that up, lol.
Not a huge fan of 12 - and I got it when it came out. Combats ok, if slow - it would be better if the characters weren’t all duller than cardboard.
And 15, like 16 - looked appealing on its surface - but when I started reading about some of the plot, and some of the boss fights (72 real time hours??? Are you shitting me??) I noped out.

When I first saw FF16's combat and party system, my initial impression was "FF13 but with real-time." Y'all remember that Lightning Returns? Probably not. Companions in that game are the same as in FF16. They do whatever they want and you have no control over them. The difference is Lightning Returns was a weird spinoff where combat felt built around controlling only Lightning. That's why she had all the different outfits and shit. Each outfit was like a class and you could hotswap between 3.

Now, I'm not saying Lightning Returns was a good game. Just that I understand why the combat was built around one character. Since the game was called: "Lightning" Returns. If you made an FF game called, "Final Fantasy: Boring Fucker Named Clive", then I'd understand why it's a knockoff dmc clone with a single character.

Everyone right now is in the honeymoon with this game. I've noticed that current meme year gaming consoomers are massive hypecucks who get drawn into every new release because they're so desperate for a good game to play. We won't get a clear picture on FF16 until a few years from now. BTW I agree that Simp-phony-ah handled party combat better in an action system. Star Ocean 1 and 2 didn't do a bad job either. There are ways to let your player control a single character while still giving them control over what the party is doing.

Plus the characters are actually equals. A second player can join the fun easily, and with a special snowflake adapter you can have all 3 characters controlled by a human.
