At least the combats a little quicker. It does look like a game I could enjoy playing assuming the story is only sort of cringe as opposed to really cringe. The combat in 12 was *really* tedious - the question is will the characters be worth a damn? The answer: probably not.

I don’t know why FF10s combat system got jettisoned so quickly. It needed to be honed - the Sphere Grid worked against every party member having a specific utility - but the combat was some of the most engaging I’ve seen in the series.

The combat in 12 was *really* tedious - the question is will the characters be worth a damn? The answer: probably not.

I'm pretty sure all the focus went to the main character, since the most players will likely keep the rest of the party as AI buddies (which are generally a crapshoot outside of FF12 ironically, since at least there you can program them yourself).
They should honestly rip off Tokyo Xanadu where you control a 3-man tag team instead of having 2-3 AIs getting themselves killed.

Square honestly believes that turn-based combat is too "outdated" for mainstream audiences. The only time they do anything resembling klessik FF combat is for FF-adjacent spinoffs like Bravely Default, and they never learn any lessons from these games doing better than they expected.

Square-Enix is run by arrogant idiots. The entire reason why the first version of FF14 was such an unmitigated disaster was because they were completely out of touch with the MMORPG market.

It's been a downward spiral ever since FF10, or going even further back, since arguably FF7 (overrated to hell and back in retrospect). One could argue how there were still good entries released here and there, but the complacency coupled with acclimating their consumers to accepting the general lowering of standards can be traced back to 25+ years. The lack of logical resource allocation, the total higher-up mismanagement that's become increasingly worse over the past decade, and the hiring/promotion of shitty writers/directors/designers (e.g. Tetsuya Nomura, Motomu Toriyama, Yoshi P, etc.), and you've got a once celebrated IP which inevitably became a milked, has-been joke of a franchise that's going through an identity crisis.
Kind of like Sonic.

I like 10 - combats good, the pacing is rarely disrupted, musics great, and the people that hate Tidus are usually projecting.
it has flaws - clear and present flaws (the Celestial Weapon side quests - hoooooly fuck), but I enjoyed my experience replaying it, recently.

Most complaints about FFX are "maps are just hallways!" and "Tidus is <gay/annoying/gay and annoying>". I remember playing it just fine, the only problem was that I did my nigga Khimari an injustice and completely screwed his build by hopping into Lulu's sector because I thought he would play well as a blue mage.
