Is it? Ambidextrous, light, long barrel into compact design, allegedly easy to shoot with despite the high rate of fire and some overheating issues. Takes standard NATO round. I get that it's a smaller chamber, but it has its advantages.

AKs have been so popular because they were cheap to make. I don't know about their effectiveness, while I don't know much about guns, at least the most popular AK-47 (not some modernized variants) seem like katana of assault rifles to me.

Unless you're some guerilla fighter spending years in jungle, FAMAS seems like the better choice to me.
