It's not about whether you can do covers like those. It's that publishers generally don't. They tend to go for some minimalist modern art crap

The first cover, if I didn't know anything about Ian Fleming or Bond or Goldfinger and I picked that up at a book store or whatever, the cover would make me want to read it. The second one is just so dull. It really looks like the publisher just spent like five minutes on photoshop or whatever and gave it no more thought than that
