I'm pretty sure a gay actor playing a straight character is okay, whereas the other way around would be problematic.

No they legitimately believe that gay actors should only play gay characters. Before Ellen Page cut her tits off and decided she was a man, she was getting a lot of blowback from 'the LGBT community' for playing heterosexual women roles
