What is up with Japanese remakes/remasters vastly changing the character designs? I know Langrisser is kinda infamous for this (since they changed from klessik Loddos-War-like designs to generic animu crap), but I've noticed this in SaGa as well.
This hurts my feelings especially considering that Trials of Mana did a true-and-honest translation of the iconic character designs.

I know people feel strongly about the redesigns and have since the ps2 era. I can't say it bothered me. Some have suggested the remaster could have included optional costumes to revert the designs to their SNES origins. Barbara has looked that way since Minstrel Song debuted on ps2 and changing her while porting that version of the game would have been unfaithful to the ps2 game.

The best solution to this problem would be for Square to make an HD version of Romancing Saga 1 (not Minstrel Song,) in the vein of Romancing Saga 2 and 3 HD. Who knows, this may even happen. Square have been pumping out the Saga ports. It's not inconceivable we could eventually see every iteration of SaGa ported to modern systems. Kawazu or whoever is pushing hard for these passion project remakes is clearly dedicated.

I'm okay with Barbara. The most atrocious change is Grey. He was transitioned into a basically David Bowie for no reason. Some arranged music tracks suck too. The devs these days finally started to realize it's totally okay to use the original assets, but PS1,2 era devs were trying to fix something not broken.

It's just she is suffering from weird chibi like in-game model syndrome rather badly. At least her original art is fine as long as you can ignore the horn thing.
