Much like the original Fred, our Fred is a wh`ite guy who loves to take credit for everyone else’s work. But our Fred is also a pretty boy gym rat, riddled with daddy issues big enough to make Eric Trump say “damn.” And yet, Fred knows that no matter how douchey he acts, he’ll never live up to his father’s expectations. I also appreciate that they went the extra mile of calling NotShaggy by his actual first name "Norville" (a fact absolutely no one knows without googling it). Maybe they wanted to be especially obtuse, or they feared that "Shaggy" could be a racist reference to his Wakandan hair.

Velma never struck me as particularly dykey. This is what happens when you allow fanboys control of established properties. They immediately implement their garbage fan theories

I fear this might be the result of a two-pronged assault:

1) It is easy to assume that quirky Velma would be the character all your PURs and other thots would most identify, and you can't be a proper thot avatar in Current Year if you're merely hetero (since thots all claim to be at least bi).

2) Queer-Coding. It's like gang stalking, but instead of using arbitrary nonsense "evidence" to "prove" that some random 3D person has to be a gang stalker, you use arbitrary nonsense "evidence" to "prove" that a 2D character just has to be some shady of queer.

Well, I don't know what any of that means, but the whole Velma situation sort of reminds of Renee Montoya. Montoya was a woman cop character in Batman: The Animated Series who was the partner of Harvey Bullock and, like Harley Quinn and a few others, she got transplanted to the comics (although I think, technically, she appeared in the comics before B:TAS first aired, but she was created by the B:TAS writers for B:TAS)

Anyway, throughout her entire history she was written as heterosexual, had relationships with men, never showed sexual interest in anything other than men. That was until a guy named Greg Rucka got his grubby little hands on her, saw 'fiery latina cop' and decided 'must be lesbian'. The series bible for B:TAS even describes her as a widow who wants children. Clearly Rucka never read it. He saw 'fiery latina cop' and thought to himself 'must be lesbian'.

Then he came up with a bunch of ad hoc justifications for why this previously heterosexual character who's only been with men was totally a lesbian. 'She was always a lesbian, people just didn't want to admit it' and 'Those guys she was with were totally just beards', etc etc.

Then GLAAD and a bunch of other gay advocacy groups threw a bunch of awards at him, praising him for being so 'progressive' and 'inclusive' and all that jazz, when really all he did was pander to stereotypes.

That's exactly what they've done with Velma here. These hack writers, they see a kind of frumpy girl who wears thick glasses and a sweater and they think 'must be lesbian'. So of course as soon as they get their grubby little hands on the property, they go and implement their fan theory contrary to all prior evidence, and then they get celebrated for pandering to stereotypes.

It's bicycle theory in action. These ideologues with their identity politics have to keep peddling, throwing over old concerns like ethnic and gender stereotyping, because if they stop peddling, they'll fall over

But yeah, I think we're seeing this trend from different directions. Hack writers want to queer up characters, so they're making up justifications and excuses as to how this is totally in-character.
