I may have seen dr who references here and there and never understood them. It was always the police box or some fag with a scarf acting like people should know who that is.
I never knew about the show until some people said the last season with whatsername turned it into shit. Looked into it a bit, seems like it was always shit even if maybe a b little less than it is now.

I have never actually seen the show, nor any of the movies.

You'd have been better off saying that Tatort is unknown outside of the Germanosphere, because it is. Nobody knows your German TV shows

It's pretty difficult to come up with an example that is both very popular domestically unpopular internationally but still being known enough internationally for people to have heard about it.
For TV shows, at least. Marmite would actually be a solid example outside of media.
