Shaft had popularity outside of America, as many American films do because American culture is world culture. Dr Who is virtually unknown outside of Britain. Before the reboot the only Americans who watched it were hipsters, sci-fi nerds and writers of The Simpsons (but I repeat myself). Since the reboot it's managed to find a slightly bigger audience of American hipsters and sci-fi nerds

No shit one two hour movie didn't have the same market penetration as three hour-long TV shows that ran for years and had hundreds of episodes. You really shouldn't have switched and said the original film wasn't well known either. At least when said you were talking about the Shaft TV show that would have been indisputable. The TV show wasn't a success anywhere
