I've never been able to get into it. In a normal story, the reader needs to identify in some way with the MC to properly enage the imagination and invest in the narrative.
With isekai, we're being asked to click with the dude playing a dude disguised as another dude in a meaningless fake world.

Self insert isekai is just for a different kind of loser than the one you are.

Isekai is stupid and it's not a coincidence it usually goes right along with haremshit, some of the laziest mango writing in the world.

I like El Hazard, but it has some different aspects from your average isekai (mainly, MC is sent to El Hazard with his rival, his childhood love interest, and alcoholic teacher, and all of them get a specific ability when they get there).

Dude, El Hazard was like the 90s. Isekai didn't turn into unsalvageable haremshit until sometime after Digimon Frontier.
