Its main claim to fame are the unconventional Gundam designs and the fact all Gundam pilots have to pilot them shirtless because of the required spinal implant (which sadly means there's only one female pilot, she looks like a boy and pilots a Mobile Suit that doesn't need implants).
It also has historical significance because it's the last non-UC Gundam series before the abortion that was Reconquista in G made them stop doing any more continuities and focus almost exclusively on UC nostalgia (not counting the SD Gundam and Build spinoffs, of course).

Gundam as a franchise probably should have ended after the OVA stuff. Stardust Memories, War in the Pocket and 08th MS Team were the last series that felt like they added something to Gundam. Turn A was... Well it was certainly a thing. But it could have been under a totally different IP and nothing would have needed to change.
