Ah yeah HeXen.. Bit of a toss up between this and Strife. The latter is certainly better structured so I could actually finish it (reached two endings, not sure if there's more), whereas I think I eventually gave up in the former by the time I reached Hypostyle hub.

Hexen filtered me almost instantly when I played it years ago. I had zdoom and I tried all the doom engine games that were in the package I downloaded. I thought Hexen was a cool idea, but I got lost and gave up. I have no intention to ever go back to that shit. Hexen is still a neat concept for an FPS, but Heretic is the better game and deserves more credit.

Shame shadow warrior became... Whatever the fuck it is now. I'm glad nobody has tried to reboot Blood. Well, nobody except a certain Manwha author.

And yes, the author of Priest confirmed that he got the idea for the story by playing Blood. This becomes very obvious when reading Priest. The tone is slightly more serious, but still very much paced like an FPS video game. Ivan Isaacs revels in killing the undead in just the way a player character would. Priest is, sadly, unfinished and will forever remain so.

The only good first-person fantasy games are turn-based.

Blood killed itself thoroughly with Blood II The Chosen.
Even though it broke new grounds with possibly (or not) the first trans character ever (Gabriel/Gabby).
I hope no one picks up on that.
At least Priest looks great, I'll definitely look into that.

Blood II is the Daikatana of Blood.

I'm surprised you don't know about Priest. I used to shill it here a lot, years ago. You can get all of it online and read through pretty quickly. It's 15 volumes or so and unfinished. But the main thrust of the story, including all of the backstory, is completed. It begins as the wacky Blood take-off that you'd expect, and then diverges into an extended, more serious flashback, explaining how an idyllic western countryside became the hellspawn-infested nightmare that Ivan Isaacs loves so much. I can't really describe Priest any better than to say it's Blood. It has all of those Blood elements. Horror, humor, tragedy, relentless action... And a fantastic art style.

What about that one comic book series which is essentially Mexican Spawn? I've been meaning to look for that.

Yeah, it's a massive noob filter. But even I got annoyed with it and haven't picked it back up.
One day I will, though.

I thought it was cool for about five minutes, until getting lost.

I've been going through DOOM, DOOM II and QUAKE properly. When I played the DOOM games as a kid, I never really bothered to save my game. So I'd play for a half hour or hour, then stop, then come back and start over again. Never made all that much headway playing like that. I heard people saying Quake is easier than DOOM and I think that's somewhat true. Episode 1 on Normal was a cakewalk. Episode 2 has been a little harder so far, but not really "hard" so much as "where the fuck do I go to continue the level."

I'm also playing Duke 3d and finding it easily the hardest of DOOM, DOOM II and QUAKE. More intricate keycard/progression puzzles and some pretty difficult hitscanners and turret traps.

If you're saying Strife is playable, despite looking to me like more Hexen hellmazery, then maybe I'll give that a shot whenever I finish what I'm doing now.

Unlike HeXen, Strife gets a bit easier to get around after the initial learning curve (sewers, fortress) and when you know the lay of the land or whatsitcalled.
It's certainly worth a try because it's one of the most ambitious games of the time in Doom engine.
Just watch that intro, it's got the oldey time Warcraft 1 kinda energy.

Strife was like them trying to make an Elder Scrolls with guns long before Fallout.
