Really? Because that sounds more like South Park: Stick of Truth censorship and they did this shit to whole jewrope. Except PC version.

I think the South Park one was a bit more on the nose, with the screen showing some Greek statue and the text explaining in detail what you're not allowed to see. Also the audio may or may not have been still there.
I got an uncensored version, so who knows the truth.

I had the censored version, basically the cutscenes played normal but the visual cut out (black screen, no on screen text) whenever something violent was happening. I could tell because it was still perfectly audible. At first I assumed my gfx card was dying or something.
It was retarded, but on the upside it seemed to still be compatible for co op play with uncensored versions, except some missions didn't appear on my end such as the zombie (?) ones.
Honestly, our censorship was always an open invitation to just pirate the damn games, for me. It wasn't ever worth owning the neutered versions that most of the time even were language locked (and our vidyo game dubs are utter trash).

It seems though that games don't need to be submitted to our cutting board if they will only receive digital sales and no actual sale on shelves in country. Some companies who are smart are just foregoing the physical sales but big AAA tards think they'd lose out on dosh so they'll have their product censored into oblivion, which then is applied to digital sales as well.

My favorite from back in the day was still Half Life with Cyber Freeman vs the robo-grunts.

By personal highlight of Best Half-Life though is that scientists and other civilians just sit on the ground and shake their heads when they should explode, fall over or otherwise die.

Literal, direct translations are usually bad, they'll look like tech and scientific manual translations. The problem is that localizers decided to go full on retarded when adapting references and jokes, probably because it's much easier to write some dumb shit they know about than researching a proper localized reference.

My brothers fitted me in 2020 a hardcover edition of The Silmarillion. When I opened it to read, I started noticing that they weren't using the usual translations for "orcs", "dwarves" and "elves", but some shitty terms that, while technically correct, sound and look terrible. Then I noticed that the edition I had was printed by a different printing house (Harper Collins), with a new translator, who tried to justify his butchering in the Translation Notes with "being faithful to muh Biblical tones of the original work". Just terrible literal translations all around that fucking book.
