I used to laugh at Doge for never switching up his formula one bit in the years he's been making videos but it turns out that this was the only way to play.
His fans won't accept one iota of change as he painfully learned from his demo reel stint and he's thus giving them what they want, and no more, no less.
Must be the reason why he and James are keeping better than the rest, Doge likely even more so because Retardo Rolfe doesn't even write his own material anymore (i. e. no longer has Loco Bandito doing it for him).
Doge is also smart enough to leave his politics at home and out of his stuff so that in theory "everyone" could watch it.

I don't agree with this. Jontron was able to successfully move away from video games and movie content, and became wealthier than ever as a result.
And most Rolfe fans will agree that Board James was a show worthy of AVGN too.

Demo Reel and the recent Cinemassacre stuff failed simply because they sucked. The ideas were terrible and the execution was godawful. Their fans gave them a chance out of respect to Doge and James respectively, and realised it wasn't worth it. That is all you can ask of any fandom.

If Doge had come up with a better comedy show and if James hadn't become so lazy, the two of them would be Youtube powerhouses still.
