Midsommar is the ripoff of the Wicker Man, with a supposed reference to The Virgin Suicides that goes nowhere.
Hereditary is the ripoff of Rosemary's Baby, with some Shining and The Lords of Salem thrown in it to pretend it's original.

The only (involuntarily) good thing Ari Aster has ever made is the short movie The Strange Thing About the Johnsons, the HEILarious story of Lebron, raping his own father for years.
It's on Youtube, but it's age restricted so it's pointless to link it.

I like Hereditary, because it is at least NOT a horror movie made out of nothing but jump scares, which is unfortunately rare these days.

It also does very well at building tension, for example the scene where the brother goes to his room, with his sisters headless body still in the car and just waits for the morning to come, or the scene where the mother tries to burn the book and her body starts to light up too - both of these were brilliantly done, in my opinion.

It DOES fall apart towards the end, partly because of Ari Aster's obsession with old naked people, but it doesn't ruing the entire experience, not for me at least.

Midsommar is pretty shitty though, as it acts more as an exploitation movie, than a horror one, as there's no real horror to be found - there's no tension, you know that all of them are screwed and it drags for way too long - I don't want to sit through 150 minutes of someone's twisted interpretation of some dumb bitches feelings as she's going through the breakup, also there's zero originality throughout the entire movie. Even the separate scenes, as the guy getting blood eagled for example, were clearly only put there, because Ari Aster saw "The Vikings" or some shit and thought "oh, that's cool, I want to have that in my movie," as it doesn't really serve any purpose.

Guy gets blood eagled, for pissing on some tree? Really? It's not scary, it's just dumb.
