And to be fair, it's pretty much impossible to get an appointment with a vet in the US right now. My family is learning this the hard way right now.

I've heard a few different theories, but it's basically all down to Wu Flu. From a vet friend of mine:
"The veterinary profession has been overwhelmed since early in the Covid lockdown. Tons of people getting new pets, and people at home recognizing when their pet is not doing well. The demand has completely [overwhelmed] the supply of clinics and caregivers."

But I've also heard that many of the vet techs stayed home at first and were too lazy or scared to come back to work.

Yep. We switched vet clinics because we had an urgent need for a visit and our old clinic told us they couldn't do anything. It was either run to an animal hospital or get jack shit. Well, our issue wasn't quite "omg pet is gonna die" level (as far as we knew) so fuck us right? Wait a month or longer to get in, IF you can get in at all. We said screw it and left them. Decades as customers and they couldn't find the time for a sick animal.

It has taken about a year to schedule dental work for one of our pets. We knew they needed it but shit takes forever now.

What these vets don't realize is a lot of the "new pet owners" are fairweather covid fuckers. They're stuck at home now so they all buy pets. When/if things ever open up, they'll dump the pets at the shelter. Why? Because a) pets are hard work and b) pets that are never trained how to be apart from their owners tend to develop separation anxiety. Most owners, I have found, don't want to deal with a pet that has separation anxiety. They'd rather "take it back." People view pets as commodities rather than living beings. All those dogs are gonna go right fucking back to a shelter as soon as the covid restrictions lift and work-at-home is taken away from the majority of jobs (which it will be, because boomers run the world and they want you to suffer.)

There's a common mistake that Spoons manipulates his fanbase for cash. He's actually terrible at that and ignores or denies using a lot of means he could generate revenue. Spoons just wants validation (he originally started Youtube before there was any money rewards remember) and doesn't want to be criticized.

That's basically what we were told. My parents found a month-old baby kitten in their backyard and took it in believing it was abandoned. They wanted to get her checked out by a vet. Also, the baby had bitten off the plastic nipple off of her (Chinese-made) feeding bottle and my mom was afraid she had swallowed it.

They were told they would have to wait two months. They called around and everyone was saying the same thing. We went to the emergency vet and were eventually turned down and referred to another emergency vet. That emergency vet told us it would be an EIGHT HOUR wait. And we weren't allowed to wait in the waiting room either. We were to wait eight hours in the car. Now how the fuck were we supposed to do that, especially with a baby animal?

So my mom is taking care of her as best as she can on her own. Then about a week ago they found the mother cat and a half-dozen sibling kittens living under their house. We're at a complete loss of what to do. None of the no-kill shelters will take them now. Worse comes to worst, they could let them live outside as ferals, but they can't get into a vet to do the spay/neuters that will be necessary in a few months from now.

If you're a sick animal, you're basically fucked right now.
