Oh God, I fucking hate this trend. It's one thing if it's a game that has already been properly translated, but now I'm seeing it happen to games that never were translated. I get excited when I see there's a new translation and then I see it's just some asshole's "woolseyfied" version.Guest wrote: ↑Wed Jun 30, 2021 7:36 amA "new" (not all that new anymore) trend in English fan patching is to playact like the game was localized, the entire reason people liked fan patches over official translations in the first place.

I guess it fits the Ready Player Soy zeitgeist, seeing a "son of a submariner" or "spoony bard" as the height of comedy
Some fan translation go for edge instead. I remember some German translation of Tales of Phantasia where everyone swore like a sailor.

That's always been a problem with fansubs. I've tried to explain to fansubbing friends that "this manga/anime/game was actually targeted at children" and to write accordingly.VoiceOfReasonPast wrote: ↑Wed Jun 30, 2021 4:37 pmSome fan translation go for edge instead. And then there was one NES game where somebody translated "pokapen" as "chink". And it's like, why would a Chinese girl in a item shop screen call you a chink? Maybe think about context and "does this make sense" before committing.

Must be a translation from the old English patch. "She fucks like a tiger" is one of the more memorable lines.VoiceOfReasonPast wrote: ↑Wed Jun 30, 2021 4:37 pmSome fan translation go for edge instead. I remember some German translation of Tales of Phantasia where everyone swore like a sailor.

Yeah, my memory is dim, but I seem to recall that the English version wasn't all that much better. It's just extra weird reading it in my native tongue
I guess this is what I get for playing the German translation of a title that has no nostalgia within the German SNES community (unlike Seiken Densetsu 3 / Secret of Mana 2 / Trials of Mana whose German fan translation honors the legacy of Secret of Mana).

Oh. Yes that good ol translation. I definitely enjoyed the dialog in that when I was younger.Guest wrote: ↑Wed Jun 30, 2021 5:40 pmMust be a translation from the old English patch. That’s my beef with both official and fan translations, just give me a 1:1 translation and piss off. I don’t need localization because my dumb burger brain can’t grasp the concept of a riceball. To me it’s about finding balance, like how in Dragon Ball a lot of the attacks and terminology are very literally translated and sound kinda awkward and not as cool compared to their counterparts. I’m sure any player who wants to know what something means can look it up, and I don’t need assholes putting their own personal shit into games. Somehow they slipped that into a recent game called 13 Sentinels by having a character say he was non binary instead of the original dialogue where he simply stated he was more comfortable disguised as a woman. Fucking hell.Liar Revealed wrote: ↑Wed Jun 30, 2021 4:19 pmOh God, I fucking hate this trend. Oh, here's that "chink" game, btw.

http://www.romhacking.net/translations/1697/
Pokopen literally means "insufficient" or "no good". It originates from Chinese during wartime and I guess that's why certain people (look to be) offended by it.

Can't be racist if you're a chink yourself.
Apparently they didn't like "Turtle Destruction Wave" ("Schildkrötenvernichtungswelle", God I love German compound words), so instead they turned it into "Shockwave of the old Ancestors" ("Shockwelle der alten Ahnen"), which is even lamer.
A more recent case comes from the German dub of Gurren Lagann, where they decided to translate the iconic Giga Drill Break(er) for some reason. I don't think there's any way you could say "Giga Bohrer Durchbruch" and have it sound even half as manly as the real deal.
Soon, we will get to a point where no precious tomboy will survive the translation process without becoming trans or non-binary.
The earliest German Dragon Ball dub actually insisted on translating the Kamehameha.Old Black Man wrote: ↑Wed Jun 30, 2021 7:05 pmTo me it’s about finding balance, like how in Dragon Ball a lot of the attacks and terminology are very literally translated and sound kinda awkward and not as cool compared to their counterparts.

This is an entirely different translation issue for both games and animu: Deliberately being more "loose" with your translation in order to justify adding in more diversity shit.I’m sure any player who wants to know what something means can look it up, and I don’t need assholes putting their own personal shit into games. That’s very interesting about the translations. I remember playing one of the DBZ games and thinking the attack names like Neo Tri-Beam and others were bland, then I hear Kikoho and it sounded better. It’s a bit like gaming franchises with confusing titles and numbering, Final Fantasy corrected that shit right after 7, and even Story of Seasons reclaimed its proper title despite gears of being Harvest Moon. I don’t mind a title change as long as it’s accurate, I’ll admit some Japanese titles sound off even by their native tongue. Granted I always liked the goofier titles, being a 90’s horror fan I got great stuff like Resident Evil, which I do think sounds better than Biohazard, The House of the Dead, Illbleed, Blue Stinger, and Galerians.
And that’s the sad truth too. Gotta love how SJWs contradict themselves by labeling any female character who isn’t a super girly girl a tranny or other, then hating the girly girl archetype because muh Sarqueesian bitching. Fuckers need to watch Revolutionary Girl Utena and then talk, although they’d probably just ruin that with Steven Trooniverse level autism theories.
