You could argue every movie with a sequel was self-contained and didn't need another
Not really. Back to the Future had a sequel hook. Terminator had a sequel hook. Batman '89, Batman Begins, those had sequel hooks. Plenty of big blockbuster films that were intended to become franchises at least set up for a sequel, even if they never made them. But Blade Runner? All the Replicants are dead and, depending on which version you watched, he's run off with Sean Young either to spend the rest of their lives in the countryside or to spend an uncertain future with her where we don't know if she'll live another day or month or whatever. There really wasn't a need for a sequel or much material to build one off.
A side story set in the same universe, however, is arguably a different story

Batman beat the Joker, avenged his parents, Gotham is saved. End of story. There's literally no hook for a sequel other than "well, we really want to see more Batman."
If you're fine with a million fucking capeshit and space wars movies, then you should eat a bowl of STFU whenever someone wants to make a sequel to anything.
2049 was ass. There were a few cool parts, but it was typical Denise Villanoob hipster Clown World garbage with an unnecessary Jared Leto role and long shots of the hero staring into the distance. The first Blade Runner was garbage too. Ridley Scott's early movies were unbearably tedious.

Never liked Blade Runner. The setting, in the broadest way, is all it ever had going for it. And I do mean only in the broadest sense. Cyberpunk is the second gayest setting there is. Steampunk being the most gay, of course.
Braun der Geist und braun die Seele, eine braune Bruderschaft, in uns brennt die Schwarze Sonne, das Symbol der Gegenkraft.

Not a Gibson fan, then?

Except for the Harkonnens. Who will be white to the last man.
The Baron might be a bit tricky to pull off considering he's a fat pedo. They might change that to appease the Left.
The Baron looks like fat Powder in the new movie. Kind of a weird blend of various INs.

Not a Gibson fan, then?
Cyberpunk with its silly cyberspace hacking is basically Digimon without the awesome furries. Who gives a shit, honestly?
Cyberpunk
games are even sillier, since they generally ignore the whole "-punk" thing and
always have you work for the big MegaCorps.
Autism attracts more autism. Sooner or later, an internet nobody will attract the exact kind of fans - and detractors - he deserves.

Even the Mario Bros movie had a sequel hook.
I bet at least Movie Blob would have wanted to see it.
It's a trap!
