This was years ago, back when the industry actually paid people a decent wage. Liefeld is also, despite what people think of him, a superstar artist. So yeah, Time Warner coughed up the money

DC paid liefeld extra to do that one issue of TT, and used his cred as a celebrity artist to do it. And that one issue saw a 30k increase in sales for that book compared to the previous or next issue. People were literally buying that issue because Rob liefeld drew it.

Do I think a lot of the buys were hate buys? Certainly possible, but again Rob liefeld laughed to the bank.

He can't fucking draw. Yes, Liefeld's haters, particularly Reuisu, are more autistic than Liefeld himself. But the hate isn't unwarranted. He doesn't know perspective or anatomy and he swipes other people's work. He's probably the biggest swiper in comics since Bob Kane

He has the popularity he does because he drew an X-Men book in the 90s and then joined the other Image founders in leaving Marvel basically to publish their own X-Men rip-offs.

Incorrect. Before Liefeld and the Image set came along, Marvel had like a house style. Kind of a mixture of Jack Kirby, John Romita and John Buscema. Now, granted, your average Marvel artist-for-hire wasn't exactly those guys, but they had to know certain basics otherwise Marvel would consider their stuff unpublishable. To illustrate this, for example, Todd McFarlane did an issue of GI Joe that was so terrible the company thought it unpublishable and got Marshall Rogers, a good artist, to completely redraw it from script. (They would later publish McFarlane's version once he became a superstar artist on Spider-Man)

Then Liefeld came along and demonstrated a complete lack of knowledge of the fundamentals. But the images were eyecatching and the books sold gangbusters (because comics are a visual medium and pin-ups tend to catch the eye when you're leafing through them in the store) so what it basically told people was that it doesn't matter whether or not you actually understand the basics of artwork so long as you can draw a good pin-up.

So yeah, he's hated. Set the industry back twenty years
