I believe him that his ribs were bothering him. Not "broken" like he says, but after that car crash you could see in the video (thanks tony) that he couldn't quite breathe right and mentioned his ribs hurt. The cop took one look and recommended a hospital visit but spoony knew better.

He was probably just in shock, as happens when you get in a car crash. That's why the cop recommended he get in the back of his car to stay warm. They also almost always recommend a hospital visit. I got in a car crash when I was a kid. Wasn't hurt, but they took us to the hospital to get checked out anyway.

I wonder if cracked ribs do the same, especially if you let them heal on their own.

Yeah, all they'll do if you break a rib is x-ray your chest to make sure the rib hasn't fractured in a way that it's in any danger of puncturing your lung. You can't splint or support your ribs really
