Bleach is just bad though. I'd say it's bad even compared to other bad shounen like Naruto. The new current shitty shounens are My Hero Academia (which is ok I guess, I mean it's better than Bleach) and shit like World Trigger (also not very good.)

Why do you not like World Trigger? I thought it was pretty good; it has a lot more strategy in the fights than is typical for a shonen series, which often just boil down to characters one-upping each other with some random new power or counter until the fight ends.

Because it's 100% fights and nothing else. They are fairly creative about the fights, but it doesn't make any sense why all these kids would be fighting each other in all these little tournaments anyway. Also, they use fake spirit bodies so they can show people getting cut in half without any stakes. In general, stakes are super low all the time. Except at the very beginning when the fights were more serious, and then during a certain event where some dudes attacked for realsies. But mostly it's tournament bullshit between high school kids who can't actually hurt each other and have no reason to fight anyway except some vague shounen shit about showing off their power level dicks to senpai.

Well, the point of them fighting each other is twofold: First, it's training to get stronger so they can fight off any actual invasions better, and it's also the method for determining which are the strongest squads because they're the ones that get sent on the missions into the other world.

Still, I will admit that the series has been focusing too much on the tournament. All the tournament battles have been good for the purpose of development and I've liked most of them individually, but it's been going on for so long that it's starting to get a bit tiring and you just want them to get to the other world already. The good news is that the series did seem like it was moving towards a conclusion on that point, with there being only two matches left, but unfortunately that's also when it went on hiatus.

They seem to very occasionally tweet to each other, so they're at least not on bad terms.

That was one of the reasons. Brad was looking into doing more movie stuff and Spoony was up for it, but then the planned one stalled so he tried to make Shot on Shitteo, which never happened, and now he's doing Jesus, Bro. I think the idea was also to do some Midnight Screenings or just be more sociable but that failed.
