My own mother never made a big deal (or any kind of deal) about the toilet seat being up. I only learned that it was even a thing outside of movies and TV when I went to stay with my grandmother (her mother) and she said to us (me, my brother and my grandfather) 'Look, I know you're all men but could you please put the toilet seat down when you're finished with it'.
