It's like both a sequel and prequel to the OG Transformers cartoon, since it's about a later batch of transformers who land in Earth's past (because at one point they dig out Gen 1 Megatron).

But it already has megatron and optimus prime(al) in it. I'm so confused.

It gets even more confusing if you consider that BW Megatron and Optimus went through both a size change and a form change (Megatron turning from an alligator to a T-Rex, and Optimus turning from a bat to a gorilla).

(At least the toys did; dunno if that was brought up in the cartoon.)

When Beast Wars was announced, Optimus Primal was a bat and Megatron was an alligator. (The Gorilla and T-rex came later.)

At least half of the Transformers fandom went apeshit, as this flew in the face of everything that came before it with G1 and G2.

So when they finally made the cartoon, they retconned it so that Optimus Primal and Megatron were NOT the G1 characters, just different guys with the same names.
