As was said, she has a mother who still talks to her. I doubt very much her mother would refuse to feed her. More likely, mommy knows that hog isn't actually starving and can't be trusted with money. This is a mother who put one condition on her daughter moving back home: that rachel be willing to drop her spoony stalking. Rachel would rather live like she is now than to stop stalking spoony for even one day. She'd rather be "starving" than give up her depression shrine.
